Michigan’s own Meg Mallon will serve as honorary host at the 2015 Tullymore Classic, a Symetra Tour event. The Tullymore Classic runs July 3 – 5.

A Michigan Sports Hall of Famer, Mallon has 18 LPGA wins, four major championships including two U.S. Open titles and eight Solheim Cup appearances and stints as captain and assistant to the captain. Mallon still maintains a summer place in Empire in Northern Michigan.

Mallon will lend a hand and an autograph or two over the next few days as honorary host in promoting Tullymore Golf Resort, the great golf found in Michigan and supporting the young golfers who will make up the field of 144 chasing their dream of a Meg Mallon-like career.

“I’m excited to be a part of the Tullymore Classic because I got my start on what is now the Symetra Tour,” Mallon said. “I’m so proud to be from Michigan, too. The golf here amazes me and that tour helped me make it to the next level. I learned the game in Michigan and then how to travel, to compete day-after-day, to be on my own on the Symetra Tour. It’s not for everybody. Some people find they don’t like it. I just happened to love it.”

Mallon, who will take part in the pairings party tonight and play in the pro-am on Wednesday, attended Mercy High School in Farmington Hills and won the 1983 Michigan Amateur Championship. She was inducted into the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame in 2002 and in 2008 inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame.

She still competes on the Legends Tour a few times each year, and admits golf still interests her the most when it is competitive. She said the USGA establishing at U.S. Senior Women’s Open will make her want to play against the best seniors in the world.

“After my back went out in 2012 and I was Solheim captain in 2013 I didn’t play for a year and a half,” she said. “Last year I played again, did some Legends Tour events in the fall, some corporate and sponsorship events but I will go a few weeks without touching clubs. Then I have to do some cramming sessions to get ready. It takes work to get back out there. ”

As for the work of the Symetra Tour players, Mallon sees potential with the growing effort to produce polished players for the LPGA.

“Workshops, these great tournaments and just the experience they are receiving with all of it means they won’t have to go through as much of that learning curve as most of us did,” she said. “Not every golfer is exceptional like Lydia Ko. Some have to do it like Annika Sorenstam. She didn’t flash out. She became the best over time.”

The Tullymore Classic field features the up-and-coming professionals and sponsor’s exemption players Brooke Henderson and reigning Michigan Amateur champion Jennifer Elsholz of Grand Rapids. The purse is $100,000 for the pros with the winner earning $15,000 and taking a significant step towards an LPGA Tour card for the 2016 season.
