Michigan Amateur Championship Continues Friday Following Rain Suspension

GRAND RAPIDS – The first day of match play Thursday in the 110th Michigan Amateur Championship was suspended by thunderstorms, but not before there was an upset that hit like lightning.

Tyler Copp, the defending champion from Ann Arbor and stroke medalist from Wednesday, was upset 5 and 3 by Jack Williams of Rochester, a Michigan State student who is not on the golf team and was the 64 seed after stroke play.

“It was going in the hole for me,” Williams said. “That was fun.”

Copp is off to the North and South Amateur Championship at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina. Williams moved on to the round of 32.

That match was the first of the day. Several other first-round matches were incomplete when the day’s golf was delayed around 1 p.m.  The Golf Association of Michigan (GAM) hoped to play again but suspended for the day at about 6 p.m.

The GAM planned to start play again at 7:30 a.m. Friday.

Ken Hartmann, senior director of competitions, said the amount of rain and the length of time it rained caused the delay and finally suspension of play.

“We can’t control the weather but we will start again in the morning and play as much golf as we can,” he said. “I want to thank our volunteers, rules officials and the staff and members of Cascade Hills Country Club for their patience and hard work. The grounds staff had the golf course in perfect shape for the championship and we’re confident they will have it ready to go in the morning.”
