Michigan Tournament To Help Military Survivors

From The Detroit News:

The West Michigan Fallen Heroes Golf Tournament to benefit families of soldiers killed in Iraq is June 8 at Grand Haven Golf Club.

The outing is the idea of Captain Dan Rooney, an F-16 pilot in the Air National Guard who is also the PGA professional and owner of Grand Haven Golf Club. Rooney has served two tours of duty in Iraq. It was during his return home from the second in 2005 that he came up with the concept.

“I was frustrated when I came back,” Rooney said. “I said, ‘What can I do to help the war cause?’ ”

The West Michigan Fallen Heroes golf event was born. The goal is to raise $25,000 this year.

“We’ll focus on western Michigan families,” Rooney said. “The money will go directly to help pay for the education of children whose parents have been killed in Iraq. We can’t bring their parents back but we can help them financially for their college education.”

For information on the four-person scramble event, call Grand Haven Golf Club at (616) 842-4040. The entry fee is $150.

It’s a good cause. God bless ‘em
