Michigan’s Dave Hill Passes Away

Michigan’s own Dave Hill, a 13-time PGA Tour winner, has passed away. He was 74.

Hill, a Jackson native, was considered one of the best shotmakers on the Tour during the 1960 and 1970s. He won 13 tournaments on the PGA Tour from 1961-76, played in three Ryder Cups, finished second in the U.S. Open in 1970 and won the Vardon Trophy for the tour’s lowest scoring average in 1969. He also won six times on the Senior Tour.

That’s quite a career.

He was a terrific player out of High School in 1955, winning the City Championship, Jackson Masters, County Open and Public Links in the same year. That’s a feat that apparently has not been duplicated. Hill turned pro in 1958.

Dave’s brother Mike (also a pro) operated the “Hill’s Heart O’ The Lakes” course in Brooklyn, Michigan (also home to the Michigan International Speedway), a course I’ve enjoyed many times. I never met Dave, but locals said he was there quite often.

In many ways, the Hill brothers ARE Michigan golf.

  1. For the short period of time I knew Dave, I enjoyed him as a patient as well as a friend while he spent time in Sarasota. Sorry to hear of your passing. Rest in Peace my friend, your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.
