Missing Stars At The US Senior Open

Whether it’s the back-to-back scheduling with the British Senior Open, competition from the Greenbriar, or just plain bad luck, there are a lot of big names missing from this US Senior Open. Among the missing:

Tom Watson – Greenbriar (not unexpected, since he’s the pro emeritus there)
Greg Norman – ?
Paul Azinger – fatigue (this is funny, because he’s hawking those “energy field” shirts lately that are supposed to fight fatigue).
Fred Couples – back
Scott Hoch – health
Tom Perjice, Jr – Greenbriar
Allen Doyle – health
Don Pooley – back
Mike Reid – fatigue
David Peoples – injury

The good news is that these withdrawals opened the door for a lot of alternates who had played their hearts out in qualifying, but were sitting on the cusp.

  1. Yes it was a shame but I guess at their age there is always a higher probably that they won’t be quite right to play. Probably the main drawcards like Norman, Couples Langer and Watson were big losses.

  2. Greg Norman had shoulder surgery in early 2011.  I think he has just started to chip & putt recently and hopes to be able to play in early 2012.
