Mountaineers 13th at Tiger Invitational
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (March 6, 2017) – Led by Chris Williams, the West Virginia University golf team finished 13th overall at the Tiger Invitational Presented by Jason Dufner at the Grand National Lakes Course in Opelika, Alabama.
The Mountaineers shot 295-289-293=877 to finish 13 over. WVU finished ahead Kansas State (14th), marking the team’s first ever-win over a Big 12 opponent as well as rival Maryland (T-15th). No. 23 Auburn won the team title with a score of 851 for 13 under par, followed by Tory in second at eight under with an 856.
“I’m proud of the effort and preparation from the guys this week,” coach Sean Covich said. “We may not have finished where we would have liked to, but the attitude, effort and preparation were spot on. If we can go into every tournament the way we did this week, we will start to see some better golf before the spring is over with.”
Williams finished tied for 26th place, shooting 72-71-75=218. He carded 11 total birdies in shooting two over par on his way to a career-low 54-hole total.
Max Sear and Alan Cooke each shot five over par with scores of 221 to tie for 39th place. Sear shot 75-75-71, carding five birdies in the third round. Cooke finished with scores of 75-71-75.
Etienne Papineau finished nine over par, carding a 225. After struggling with a 79 in the first round, Papineau posted nine birdies across the final 36 holes. He tied for 65th place with teammate Tristan Nicholls. Also finishing nine over, Nicholls shot 73-79-73.
The Mountaineers remain on the road, traveling to Tallahassee, Florida, to compete in the Seminole Intercollegiate from March 10-12.
