Grade: Incomplete. Hard to say, for reasons explained below
Teachers’ Comments: I *think* it works. At least i seems to make my aching muscles and joints feel better after a workout.

The usual warning: consult with your physician before undertaking any alternative medicine solutions.

Muscle MX CBD Balm is part of a fast growing segment of health and fitness products centered around the use of Cannabidiol to reduce inflammation, pain, and anxiety. Since any one of those could significantly affect a round, it is no wonder that golfers are tempted to give it a go.

Over the past few months, I have tested several CBD balms and salves. Of these, the Muscle MX CBD balm is the most pleasant and perhaps the most effective.

I am really torn in writing about CBD products, though. There is absolutely no way for me to determine which of three scenarios are involved in my feeling better: 1) The CBD is effective and reduced pain and inflammation. 2) I would have recovered from muscle strain and pain in the same amount of time without any CBD intervention or 3) a placebo effect was in operation and I believed that the Muscle MX Balm is effective.

For my part, I believe that the Muscle MX CBD balm works as advertised. From experience, I have a sense of how long it takes to recover from walking a round of golf, and from a weight-lifting session (I do 34 sets for some 50,000 pounds two to three times a week). When using the Muscle MX Balm I am convinced that my recovery time is more quick and pain is reduced.

While there are few studies on the efficacy of CBD in pain management and the reduction of inflammation, there are at least some scientific reasons to believe that CBD works.

The usual explanation for CBD topicals’ potential effectiveness is that, once the substances penetrate the outer layer of skin, they bind with cannabinoid receptors. These receptors can be thought of as locks on the surface of cells, causing cellular changes when they’re unlocked. In this metaphor, cannabinoids are the keys to the locks, and those keys can be either the body’s own endocannabinoids (which play a role in exercise euphoria) or an external source of cannabinoids, such as a CBD topical.

What exactly happens as a result of this unlocking remains a matter of discussion in medical circles. It’s logical to think that reduced pain can result from activating the same cannabinoid receptors that contribute to a runner’s high. There’s also a theoretical basis for CBD lowering inflammation by inhibiting the same enzymes targeted by popular nonnarcotic pain medications such as ibuprofen and naproxen.

Muscle MX CBD Balm

Muscle MX CBD balm comes in a form that very much reminds me of a deodorant stick. There’s a knob at the bottom that pushes the stick upward; the balm itself is a solid that with body heat is very quickly melted and absorbed. I apply it from the stick, and then rub it into the skin.

Muscle MX CBD balm comes in two “flavors”: Activate CBD Heating and Recover CBD Cooling. Both smell a bit of peppermint and menthol. Both apply evenly and smoothly. Of the two, I think that I prefer the Recover Cooling. It feels really nice on sore muscles after a workout.

You can pronounce all of the ingredients in the Muscle MX balms — which I take as a good sign. The Muscle MX Activate CBD Balm contains Menthol Crystals, Camphor Oil, Arnica Montana Extract, Peppermint Oil, Beeswax, Coconut Oil, Grapeseed Oil, Eucalyptus Oil, Vitamin E, Caffeine Oil, and a proprietary scent. The Muscle MX Recover contains Menthol Crystals, Arnica Montana Extract, Peppermint Oil, Eucalyptus Oil, Beeswax, Coconut Oil, Grapeseed Oil, Vitamin E, Tea Tree Oil and a proprietary Scent.

The big difference between the two seems to be the presence of caffeine in the Activate and Tea Tree Oil in the Recover.

Like all of the CBD products I have seen, Muscle MX CBD Balm is on the expensive side, at $39.99 MSRP for a 2.5 ounce stick that contains 250mg of CBD. The entire industry is in its infancy right now, and I suspect that as use and production ramp up, prices will go down.

I hope so. I’d really like to continue using the product, and my supply is starting to run low.

Here’s my thought. If you suffer from persistent joint or muscle pain, consult your doctor to see if Muscle MX CBD Balm could be right for you.
