Nicklaus Still Thinks Tiger Will Break His Record

He’s wrong, of course, but Jack is still saying the politically correct thing:

“I’m surprised that he has not bounced back by now,” said Nicklaus on Wednesday at PGA National, where he was playing in the Honda Classic pro-am. “He’s got such a great work ethic. He’s so determined to what he wants to do. I’m very surprised that he has not popped back. I still think he’ll break my record.

He’s got such a great work ethic. He’s so determined to what he wants to do. I’m very surprised that he has not popped back. I still think he’ll break my record.

“But obviously we have not played any majors yet this year. We’ll see. You probably can ask me that same question at the end of this year and we’ll see what the answer is, and it might—it will probably define a lot of what will be the answer.”

  1. Sorry Jack, you are going to have to live with that record.  I was saying it three years ago that Tiger wasn’t going to do it.  That his highly tuned body was critical, but that his injuries were aging his body faster than Jack’s body aged.  That his ego was a big factor, as well as his competitors being terrified of him.

The knee injury set him back; YE Yang then broke something inside Tiger and redefined something for every player to come later.

He is/was still an incredible player.  As Michael Jordan miraculously carried the Bulls through Game 5 in 1997 with the flu, Tiger’s US Open in 2008 was more incredible that he had been playing for months on a busted knee.

But in 2009, even though he was still dominating he failed to win any major, and then YE Yang beat him in the PGA.

I wonder if Jack has read the Tiger vs. Jack book.  I would think by now someone has given him the cliff notes.  I have only read bits and pieces, but I got the gist.
