No Fooling: Michigan’s “Official” Golf Season Begins Today

In spite of wintry temperatures across the state and a massive ice storm in Northern Michigan the “official” golf season begins April 1.

The photo above was taken by Mrs. GolfBlogger at GolfBlogger’s secret Northern HQ located just a short drive from the Mackinac Bridge (which closed as a result of the storm). That’s the family corgi in the photo.

For non-Michiganders, Mackinac is pronounced “Mack-in-Awe.” Again. Not an April Fools joke. When one moves to Michigan, one must learn an entirely new pronunciation scheme for words.

The ice storms knocked out power to most of Northern Michigan’s counties. Here’s a map shared by a golf course owner friend in Northern Michigan:

It is wintry even here in southeast Michigan. There’s no snow on the ground, but today the mercury will struggle to get much above freezing.

The “official” golf season is a bit of an artificial construct. Your friendly neighborhood GolfBlogger plays golf in Michigan all year-round.

What’s “official” is that, according to the USGA and the Golf Association of Michigan, April 1 is the day players can begin recording their scores for handicap purposes. The “official” season ends October 31.

In any case, better weather is soon to appear, and daily play in Michigan will be back.
