Teacher’s Comments: A respectable community golf course
At the end of Main Street in Webberville, Michigan lies Oak Lane Golf Course. Seriously, how many small towns are lucky enough to have a golf course right on Main?
Oak Lane is a pleasant parklands design by Jerry Matthews which dates to 1967. The course is routed around a central hillock, into lowlands along the Red Cedar River and up and down several other small knolls. For a course in mid Michigan, it has a surprising number of (small) elevation changes.
Most of the holes at Oak Lane follow a relatively straight line from tee to green. Interest comes from the elevation changes and from the places in which rough and trees pinch the fairway. Three of the holes have concerning fairway bunkers.
There are tthree doglegs at Oak Lane: 3, 11 and 17. Water may come into play on four holes.
Oak Lane is a par 70. From the back tees, it tops out at 6, 172 yard and plays to a 69.3/122. Middle tees are set at 5, 729 yards, with a slope and rating of 66.9/114.
This is a course where a bogey golfer can have a good day.
My favorite hole was the par 4 ninth. The 401 yard hole starts near the lowest point on the property, climbing a little to a green that probably is the highest point. The fairway slopes first right to left, and then slightly left to right. The large green is open to the front, allowing a shot to bounce up and on.
Nothing fancy, just a fun hole to play.
Oak Lane’s twelfth is a 328 yard par 4. 
Thirteen at Oak Lane is a 330 yard par 4.
A fun pair of holes were the twelfth and thirteenth. The two play parallel, and fit in an odd place on the course, sticking out like a peninsula away from the other holes.
The twelfth is a 316 yard par 4 that begins on a small knoll, playing slightly downhill. As with most at Oak Lane, the outer edges of the fairway are organic, pinching in and widening in turn. The green is large and receptive.
The thirteenth plays back up toward the same knoll that hosts twelve’s tee box. Two large fairway bunkers pinch the fairway on the right, but are more of a visual threat than actual. The elevated green asks for a nice high shot to hold.
Conditions on the day I played were good. I thought the greens were noteworthy for their quality.
In the final analysis, Oak Lane is a pleasant small town course that I would happily play on a regular basis if I were a resident. Because it’s a good value, I think it’s also worth a stop if you’re in the area.
