Odds To Win The President’s Cup

Most online betting sites listed at Sports Betting Dime have Team USA as the heavy -275 favorite to win its eighth straight Presidents Cup, according to analyst Sascha Paruk of SBD

History is on Team USA’s side. Unlike the recent Ryder Cup woes, Team USA has continued to dominate the President’s Cup. Over the twelve matches, the US team has won 10, the International Team has won 1, with 1 match tied.

The lone International team win came in 1998. That team included golf Hall of Famers Greg Norman, Ernie Els, Vijay Singh and Nick Price.

And that speaks to the problem the International Team has had over the years. Restricted to non-European and non-US players, the International Team loses in the number game.

Paruk says that “the respective rosters justify the gap in the odds. Team USA has five players in the top-11 of the World Golf Rankings. The average ranking of their 12-player team is 12.3. Team International doesn’t have a single player higher than 18th (Adam Scott). The average ranking of their 12-player team is 40.5.”

Some interesting numbers from a variety of betting sites have Justin Thomas as the favorite to be the leading points scorer at +800. Xander Schauffele is in second at +900. Dustin Johnson, Patrick Cantalay an dRickie Fowler are in at +1000. Patrick Reed is in at +1200.

The first International players on the list are Adam Scott and HIdeki Matsuyama at +1400.

Interestingly, oddsmakers have Tiger Woods at +2000 to be the leading points scorer. In truth, though, his team record is but a poor shadow of his individual record.

“The matchplay format can lead to surprising results, but a Team International victory will nonetheless require a number of players to perform better than usual, and that hasn’t been Team International’s track record at this biennial event,” Paruk says.
