Odds To Win The US Open 2018
Dustin Johnson is the favorite to win the 2018 US Open at Shinnecock at 11/1. The World Number 2 didn’t make the cut at Erin Hills — a bomber’s paradise. We will see how he does at the notorious Shinnecock. This year, Johnson won the limited field, season opening Sentry Tournament of Champions, and finished T2 at the Pebble Beach. He also has a T10 at the Masters, A T7 at the WGC Mexico, and a T7 at the Memorial. He has yet to miss a cut in 2018.
Second among bettors is Rory McIlroy at 12/1. Another long hitter, the World Number 6 also didn’t make the cut last year. He has had a better year thus far, however. He won the Arnold Palmer Invitational, finished second at the BMW PGA and Omega Dubai Championship and was in a T5 at the Masters.
In at 14/1 are the Jason Day, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and Justin Rose. Rose is currently ranked third in the OWGR, while Day is eighth. Both missed the cut in the massacre at Erin Hills.
Justin Thomas, the current World Number One, tied for ninth at last year’s US Open. I have no idea why he is not favored in the odds. In 2018, he has a win, a second and a fourth. He finished eighth at The Memorial.
Spieth has struggled this year, comparatively speaking. He was third in the Masters, and had a t3 at the Houston Open. Other than that, however, his performance has been largely pedestrian: T18, T20, T9, T14, MC, T17, T41, T21, T32. He missed the cut at the Memorial. Those are not good numbers, heading into what should be the year’s toughest test.
Tiger, whom everyone is watching like a hawk, is at 20/1. The guy has over-performed compared to expectations this year. He probably has over-performed even to his own expectations. Tiger was 656th in the OWGR at the end of 2017 and currently is 80th. He has put together some remarkable numbers for a guy with a fused back. There was that T2 at the Valspar, along with a T5 at the Arnold Palmer, and an 11th at the Players, which is probably the toughest field in golf.
My sentimental favorite, Phil Mickelson, is in at 33/1. Mickelson is 20th in the OWGR. He has had a pretty good year for a 47 year old. He won the WGC-Mexico Championship, and has a T2, a T4, a T5, a T6. His only real blemish in 2018 is a missed cut at the CareerBuilder Challenge. He needs this US Open to complete the career slam.
