It should come as no surprise that the latest odds for the 2009 British Open Championship have Tiger Woods ensconced as the favorite at 13/8. The surprise is that Rory McIlroy is in at 18/1. But maybe that’s not so big a stunner: He’s the hometown favorite in what essentially is a European Tour event.
Given that he’s won two consecutive Open Championships, I would have expected to see Harrington at better than 22/1. He’s struggled with his swing a bit this year, but is a fine player who rises to the occasion in golf’s biggest events. Still, to find the last player to win three consecutive Open Championships, you have to go back to 1954 – 1956, when Australian Great Peter Thompson pulled the Hat Trick. He missed the mark in 1957, but returned to win it in 1958. Perhaps the betters think that’s too big a target for Harrington.
I don’t.
Following Harrington are a cast of the Usual Suspects: Garcia at 20/1; then Lee Westwood, Jim Furyk, Anthony Kim, Retief Goosen, Ian Poulter and Martin Kaymer all at 25/1.
The guy I’m rooting for is Kenny Perry. He’s in right now at 33/1.
