Odds To Win A Major In 2011

Betting site Bovada (formerly Bodog) has an interesting set of futures on the “Odds To Win A Major In 2011.”

Probably to no one’s surprise, Tiger is the bettors favorite, coming in at 11/8 (meaning that a bet of eight pays eleven). Rory fares slightly worse at 15/8. Luke Donald is in at 5/2.

The rest of the list features the usual cast: Lee Westwood (11/4), Phil Mickelson (7/2), Dustin Johnson 11/2, Martin Kaymer (11/2) and so on.

What strikes me about the list, though, is its lack of originality. The way things have been going this last couple of years, it seems to me as likely that someone not on the list will win. Who could have predicted Keegan Bradley, Charl Schwartzel, YE Yang, Trevor Immelman, Zach Johnson, Louis Oosthuizen, Todd Hamilton, Ben Curtis, Graeme McDowell, Lucas Glover—or even Darren Clarke? I doubt seriously if many of those made the list in the year in which they won. My own prediction is that at least half of this year’s Major winners will come from out of the blue.

You can see the complete odds below:

Rory McIlroy 15/8
Luke Donald 5/2

  1. Tiger better than 2/1 is stupid.  I don’t necessarily have a problem with Tiger topping the list, just anyone being at better than 2/1.  And Tiger’s major losing streak started when we was playing awesome and having his adulterous sex in private.  It is not related to the other losing streak.

Lee better odds than Phil, even stupider.  It may just be false hopes, but I think that Phil may win #4 this year to cap his majors.

Rickie Fowler 10/1 – not quite – Bubba should probably be on the list at 10/1.  Jason Day should be better than 6/1 and Adam Scott should be better than Jason Day.
