The betting odds to win the Farmers Insurance Open would not normally interest me, but they contain an amazing proposition: that Tiger Woods is not only not the favorite; depending upon the betting house, he’s anywhere from 30-1 to 50-1 shot.
It is particularly amazing because Torrey Pines is one of a half a dozen courses which account for half of all his tour victories. Tiger OWNS Torrey Pines. He could win there on a broken leg.
The never-before-seen odds are of course a direct result of Tiger’s shocking performance at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, but there’s something else going on: the next generation players that we have been talking about for a decade have finally shown up.
Take a look at the age of the golfers who are better than 30/1 in the odds I’m using.
Player | Odds | Age |
Jordan Spieth | 12/1 | 21 |
Jason Day | 14/1 | 27 |
Jimmy Walker | 14/1 | 36 |
Hideki Matsuyama | 20/1 | 22 |
Justin Rose | 22/1 | 34 |
Rickie Fowler | 22/1 | 26 |
Brandt Snedeker | 25/1 | 34 |
Graham Delaet | 25/1 | 33 |
Bill Haas | 28/1 | 32 |
Brooks Koepka | 28/1 | 24 |
Justin Thomas | 28/1 | 21 |
All told, they have an average age of 28. And that’s including Jimmy Walker, who at 36 is having a Vijay Singh-like renaissance. Six of the eleven are 27 or younger. Three of them are 22 or younger.
Given a chance relatively equal to Tiger are Dustin Johnson (30), Chris Kirk (29) Gary Woodland (30), Billy Horschel (28), Keegan Bradley (28) and Harris English (25).
Tiger laid an egg last week, but I fully expect him to correct that. His real problem is that the other talent has caught up to him.
This is actually an event six years in the making—ever since YE Yang caught him from behind at the PGA Championship. That was the moment at which I said—and wrote—that his days of complete dominance were over. Players no longer melt on Sunday when Tiger has a lead. Unlike before, they absoutely believe that they can catch him from behind. And when Tiger is behind, few are looking over their shoulders.
But is only now that the media, bettors and fans are catching on to the idea.
All that said, here are the betting odds for the 2015 Farmers Insurance Open:
