Golf’s latest “Big Three” are back in play this week: Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy. The question is whether any of them will live up to expectations. Which Tiger will show up? Is Rory over his slump? How is Phil feeling?
Punters who bet on the PGA Tour with Paddypower seem to think that Rory has the inside edge this week. He’s the favorite at 9/1. McIlroy has has a decent start to the season on the European Tour with a t2 and a t9 to his credit. This is his first start in 2014 on a regular PGA TOUR event
Tiger is in an unusual spot: He is not the favorite. At 10/1, Tiger is the punters’ second choice. He’s not had a good year so far. In the only regular season TOUR event, he missed the 54 hole cut. What’s worse, it was at Torrey Pines, a course he has historically dominated with nine wins. Tiger’s performance in Dubai was not much better: t41. He’s had just two sup 70 scores in eleven rounds. Not very Tiger-like.
Adam Scott (18/1), Graeme McDowell (20/1), Charl Schwartzel (20/1) and Sergio Garcia (22/1) all are favored ahead of Phil Mickelson (25/1). Scott has had two 2014 starts and come out with two top ten finishes. In two 2014 starts on the European Tour, Schwartzel has a t17 and a t59. That hardly inspires confidence in me. As for Sergio, I would like to believe that his show of sportsmanship this past week has earned him a measure of good karma. I’d love to see him win.
As usual, though, I think the best values are in the 40/1 range. There is so much talent on TOUR these days that someone is as likely to win from the middle of the pack as from the front. Ricky Fowler (35/1), Luke Donald (40/1) and Lee Westwood (40/1) all fit that criteria.
This should be a good outing, and tell fans a lot about the state of their favorite players’ games.
