Dustin Johnson is the punters’ favorite for the 2014 edition of the Northern Trust Open, but I really can’t figure out why. He missed the cut in 2013. Nonetheless he’s in at 11/1.
Jimmy Walker (18/1) and Jordan Speith (18/1) are the darlings of the moment. Walker has won three times in his last eight starts—a record that just can’t be explained away. He’s the real deal. Speith is in my mind a little iffier prospect. He had a win and three seconds in his first season (2013), making him somewhat of a prodigy and the current owner of the cursed “next Tiger Woods” moniker.
A more reasonable choice, in my mind, is Webb Simpson, who finished in a t6 at last year’s Northern Trust. From all I’ve read, Riviera is a course which rewards experience. That seems to favor Simpson over Speith, at least. Walker finished t16 in 2013.
Graham DeLaet is due for a win. He finshed t21 last year and is 20/1 this year. Also in at 20/1 is Hunter Mahan, who finished in a T8 last year.
For my part, I’m pulling for Fred Couples. He loves the course and the event, and if his back holds up, I think he can still compete with the best of them on favorable course (i.e., Augusta National). He’s one of my fantasy golf picks this week, along with Mahan, Walker, DeLaet, Furyk and Charles Howell III. I also have two entirely sentimental picks: Stuart Appleby, who was my group’s pro in the Crowne Plaza Invitational I played in a couple of years ago, and Brian Stuard because he’s from Michigan. He grew up in Jackson, and I’ll bet I’ve played many of the same courses he has. It also helps that he’s been playing pretty well the last year.
