Like last week’s Arnold Palmer, the Shell Houston Open doesn’t have the strongest or deepest of fields—but it does have a couple of headliners.
Of most interest to me—and perhaps most golf fans—is how Ernie Els will do. I really would like for the guy to pull off a victory here so he can get into the Masters. Els is such an iconic figure in the golf world that its a shame he would miss one while his career still is in full flow. Bettors don’t particularly like his chances, however, as he’s in at 28/1, or a 3% chance of a win.
The favorites this week are Lee Westwood and Phil Mickelson, who are in at 10/1 and 12/1 respectively. I would not, however, put my money on either one of those guys. Phil hasn’t looked strong of late, and both have got to be thinking ahead a week to Augusta.
Actually, a lot of these guys probably are thinking a week ahead. I know that professional golfers live by the mantra of one shot at a time, but when so many say that this is a warm up to the Masters, that’s evidence that they are thinking of Magnolia Lane.
