One of the phrases I most hate to hear the television announcers throw out—and they do so quite often—is “This tournament feels like a Major.” Unlike most, however, the Wells Fargo’s starting lineup really does have the look and feel of a major. There are a few conspicious missing names: Woods, on injured reserve; Donald, presumably resting; Westwood, probably playing for the Midway Island Club Championship.
Going with the old favorite, bettor shave Phil Mickelson as the favorite at 11/1. Not surprisingly, last year’s Champion, Rory McIlroy, follows at 12/1. Then it’s a roster of the top suspects: Martin Kaymer (14/1), Dustin Johnson and Nick Watney (20/1), Jim Furyk (25/1), Hunter Mahan (28/1) and Geoff Ogilvy, Paul Casey, Rickie Fowler and Martin Laird (33/1).
As with most of the tournaments this year, I look to players out of the middle of the pack. Watson was a favorite at 25/1 in last week’s Zurich Classic, but almost-winner Web Simpson was middle of the pack at 50/1. The previous week, Brandt Snedeker was 33/1 for the Heritage—inside the top ten choices. Steele came from out of the field at the Valero, while Charl Schwartzel was 50/1 before the Masters. Middle of the pack is a pretty good bet in this year of parity.
