It is with no sense of irony that I call my Orient watches “a poor man’s Rolex.” I will never be able to afford a Rolex, but I own several Orient watches and get constant complements on them. One of my students saw one and pointing to it, said “You must be really rich.”

I am not, of course. But my Orient Watches look like luxury items. Even better: they are ultra reliable (as long as I keep them wound in an electric watch winder when not in use).

This Orient Analogue Automatic, for example, retails for just over $120. It features a leather band and a 21 jewel automatic movement in a 42mm case. It is just 11 milometers thick.

Orient is one of Japan’s top three watch manufacturers, and has been making mechanical watches since 1950. The company manufacturers their movements in-house, exclusively for their own use.
