Area 313 is a three hole stretch (14 – 16) at the Rocket Mortgage Classic named for Detroit’s telephone code: 313.
The idea is this: if any player during the course of the week accumulates scores of 3-1-3 on that stretch, $313,000 will be donated to charity — half of which goes to Detroit based charities, and the other to a charity of the player’s choice.
The fourteenth is a 543 yard par 5, the fifteenth, a 160 yard par 3 and the sixteenth, a 450 yard par 4. A player scoring a 3-1-3 on these holes would thus have an Eagle, Hole-in-One (which I suppose is technically an Eagle) and a Birdie.
There haven’t been any holes-in-one on the relatively short par 3 sixteenth. Among those golfers teeing off in Sunday’s final round, Charles Howell III, Jason Kokrak and J.J. Spaun have carded eagles on the 14th hole, while 29 others have recorded birdies on the 16th hole. There’s still hope.
Area 313 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic also serves as a focal point for the tournament. As you can see from the photos, it’s a large complex of private pavilions and pubic seating. There’s plenty of space to take it in, and if you’ve got the right grandstand seating, you can simultaneously see the action on three holes.
