MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Feb. 17, 2018) – Junior Etienne Papineau posted a top-15 finish to lead the way as the West Virginia University golf team capped the Florida Gators Invitational in Gainesville, Florida, on Sunday.
Papineau birdied a pair in the third round to finish at two-over with a 72. His 54-hole total of 69-70-72=211 put him at one-over par and in a tie for 15th place.
The No. 38 Mountaineers finished eighth in the field, shooting 278-286-297=861 for 21-over par. No. 3 Vanderbilt took the team title at one under, while No. 33 Florida was the runner-up at even par. No. 29 Liberty took home third place at two over.
“Obviously not our best day today, but I saw some guys fighting hard for every shot,” coach Sean Covich said. “Anytime you play a brand-new golf course there’s a learning curve. We certainly leave here with some things to work on before a quick turnaround next weekend at the Seminole Intercollegiate hosted by Florida State.”
After finishing the first two rounds at one under, senior Max Sear struggled in the third at and finished at five-over par. His three-round tally of 69-70-75=214 earned him a tie for 26th place at four-over.
Sophomore Matthew Sharpstene carded a score of 69-74-73=216 in the tournament. He shot three-over-par in the final round to finish at six-over and in 34th place. Junior Philipp Matlari finished 10-over par and in 49th place at 71-72-77=220 while sophomore Mark Goetz shot 76-75-80=231 to finish in 80th place at 21-over.
West Virginia returns to Florida next week to compete in the Seminole Intercollegiate on Saturday and Sunday at Golden Eagle Country Club in Tallahassee, Florida.
