My mother always said that with every door that closes, another opens. I think that’s true in the case of the USGA abandoning the Public Links Championship. In this case, the PGA of America, whose members surely manage more public links than private, could seize the day and offer its own Public Links Championship.
The event could be held annually at one of the PGA golf resort properties under the name PGA Public Links Championship. A permanent site allowis the establishment of permanent infrastructure, thus cutting down on the costs. I don’t know if there is any possibility of television revenues, but the publicity and good will surely would be worth something. With luck, the Public Links champion could still get a Masters’ spot.
Are you listening, Mr. Bishop? Here’s a chance to make a bold move.
