PGA Tour Coming To Detroit

imageThe Detroit Golf Club will hold a PGA Tour event in 2012, according to The Free Press. Cadillac presumably will be the sponsor.

Michigan has been without a PGA Tour event since 2009, the year of the last Buick Open. At the time, it was one of the Tour’s longest running events (1958 – 2009). Other professional golf events in Michigan have included the Senior Player’s Championship (2990 – 2006), the LPGA’s Oldsmobile Classic (1992 – 2004), and the Champions’ Tour’s Farmers Charity Classic (1986 – 2004). None of these events die for a lack of fan support; all had their sponsors yanked out from under them.

Michigan has been host to several major golf events in recent years: a PGA Championship and Ryder Cup at Oakland Hills, in a Detroit suburb. The US Senior Open will be at Indianwood, another suburban Detroit course, in 2012.

Having a regular tour event will be a real blessing for the area.

If anyone from DGC is reading this, I’d love to come out, play the course, take photos and write an article. It’d be great publicity for the upcoming Tour tournament.
