Given how poorly Tiger has played thus far this weekend, Phil apparently can take the #1 position by finishing 4th or higher. But right now, he’s in tenth.
It’s almost like he doesn’t want it.

It happened with Sergio too. I think the tour players on the whole have a different opinion of the #1 ranking than the fans do. They’ve had to create some kind of self-help view in order to battle the whole Tiger thing. And maybe they have the same opinion of the rankings system that I do. It isn’t reactive enough to what’s currently going on with the golfers. If you don’t believe in the rankings system when you’re a lower ranked player, it’s hard to say “yay I’m #1” when you reach that point. They know they can’t have it both ways.
But if Phil is to get the #1 ranking, he needs it to be next week at the PGA so he can have a few weeks with Tiger out of the media picture. Phil doesn’t want to have to defend anything to the media when Tiger’s there giving interviews too. You can imagine what the media pressure would be like next week if Phil gets to #1 today.
Phil’s not going to win the PGA. Whistling Straits is too much like a British Open course.
Couldn’t agree more.
This is about the 5th or 6th tournament where “this could be the week Phil gets to #1”.
It reinforces why he’s never been #1 and likely won’t be there for long. He’s great but he’s not great enough.
