Playing Charlevoix Golf Club

I recently played a round at Charlevoix Golf Club, a nine hole muni owned by the city of Charlevoix, Michigan.

The course dates to 1896, with a design my Herbert James Tweedie and Willie Watson. The course was founded by two men identified as “Chicago Club Members,” J.P. Wilson and Edward C. Waller”.

In 1937, the Chicago Club sold it to the City of Charlevoix in 1937 for one dollar.

The Charlevox Golf Club is a delightful old school course. It is walking only, and tee times are on a first come, first serve basis.

The holes are for the most part straightforward affairs, with small, round greens. The city has done a great job in letting tall grasses grow on the edges, giving the course a beautiful, textured look.

If this course were in my home town, I’d play every day.

I’ll have a full review shortly.
