Playing Mullett Lake Country Club

Playing Mullett Lake Country Club

I recently played the nine-hole Mullett Lake Country Club near Cheboygan, Michigan.

The course was built in 1921 from a design by Tom Bendelow. It is the second nine-hole Bendelow design I have played. The other was the delightful Maple Brook Golf Club in Charlotte, Michigan. Marshall Country Club was a nine-hole Bendelow original before it expanded with a design by Bill Newcomb. Huron Hills in Ann Arbor also is a Tom Bendelow design.

Here is some advice and design philosophy Tom Bendelow gave on building a golf course in an article from 1914.

Mullett Lake CC is a par 36, measuring 3, 313 from the tips. The design is classic parklands, with lots of back-and-forth fairways.

I enjoy classic designs, and Mullett Lake threw in just enough doglegs and slight elevation changes to keep it interesting.

Conditions on the day I played were good, all things considered. There’s been a long drought here in Michigan, and only in recent days has some rain appeared. The fairways were playable and the greens in good shape. Lots of dry areas just off the playing lines, though.

I enjoyed it enough to go around a second time.

I’ll have a full review at some point in the future.
