One of the things I like to do when I am on the road is pick up a bottle of a local bourbon. As with beer, there are a bewildering number of local, craft

While in Texas this past winter to play and review the Omni Barton Creek Golf Courses in Austin, I stopped at a liquor store near South Congress (known as SoCo) and picked up a bottle of Ranger Creek .36 Texas Straight Bourbon. It sat on my shelf until recently, when I held a BBQ and Bourbon Tasting Party for my friends to try the past year’s collection. I smoke up a giant pile of pork shoulder in my MasterBuilt, stack the bourbon on the kitchen counter, and we spend a pleasant afternoon/evening playing tabletop games.

The Ranger Creek .36 Texas Straight Bourbon was universally liked among my experts. It hits the tongue with some bite, as with  pepper or cinnamon. Then it leavens with some sweetness, as with vanilla and maple syrup. Strangely, I also think it feels a bit “thick.” It is not syrupy or too sweet, but there is something else going on there.

We all liked the Ranger Creek .36 Texas Straight Bourbon neat. Later, I tried it in a Manhattan (have I committed some sort of felony in Texas by doing that? Will I be allowed to go back?). The Manhattan occurred to me because I thought I detected a bit of cherry in the flavor mix. Still, I think drinking it neat is the best choice. (Will that get me a pardon for the Manhattan offense?).

I am going to be sad when my bottle is finally gone.
