Record-Setting Day for WVU Golf at Seminole Intercollegiate
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (March 12, 2017) – The West Virginia University golf team set a pair of team records, while senior Alan Cooke lowered his own program record, as the Mountaineers finished play at the Seminole Intercollegiate at Southwood Golf Course in Tallahassee, Florida, on Sunday.
The Mountaineers finished with 54-hole team total of 277-286-286=849, marking the program’s lowest tournament score of the new era. The squad finished 15 under par – also the first under-par team score for WVU. Cooke carded a score of 206, lowering his own program record by one stroke, while setting a new record at 10 under par.
“I remember leaving this same golf course last year in last place at 30 over par,” said WVU coach Sean Covich. “This year we shot 15 under par. I can’t say enough about our improvement.”
WVU golf finished in sixth place. Rival Penn State took home the team title at 31 under par with a score of 833. No. 25 Georgia Tech and No. 30 Florida State, the tournament host, tied for second place at 28 under par with matching scores of 836. The Mountaineers finished two strokes ahead of No. 31 Jacksonville, who took seventh.
Cooke notched his third career top-10 finish, taking fourth place. He birdied six of 18 holes in the final round, firing a 68 for four under par and his third consecutive round in the 60s. Cooke finished with a three-round score of 69-69-68=206 at 10 under par.
“I’m very happy for Alan,” said Covich. “He came here with redemption on his mind from last year’s performance, and I’d say he got it. It was a great job all round by the entire team this week.”
Williams joined Cooke in the top-25 as he finished tied for 22 with a score of 70-71-72=213. He made three birdies in the final round, finishing even par on the day and three under in the tournament with a career-best 54-hole total.
Tristan Nicholls ended the third round two strokes back from Williams and in 30th place. He shot 68-75-72=215, improving upon his previous career-best by four strokes. Nicholls ended the tournament one under par.
Max Sear carded a score of 70-73-74=217, carding 13 birdies as he tied for 34th place. He finished two over par in the final round and one over in the tournament.
Etienne Papineau tied for 50th place, finishing four over par. His scorecard showed 73-73-74=220. Playing as an individual, Avery Schneider shot 73-79-73=225 to finish nine over par and tied for 69th place.
After a week off, the Mountaineers head to Greenville, South Carolina, to compete in the Furman Intercollegiate from March 24-26.
