Renwick Leading WVU at Quail Valley

wvu marker-5863MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (October 26, 2015) – Senior Easton Renwick sits in the top 20 after two rounds of action at the Quail Valley Intercollegiate in Vero Beach, Florida on Monday. The event hosted by McNeese State at the Quail Valley Golf Club.

Renwick finished the day with a score of 144 (even) to tie for 18th place. The Mountaineers carded a team score of 299-301=600 to finish 24 over par. Michigan State currently sits atop the team leaderboard with a score of 565 (-11), followed by North Texas at 566 (-10). Jacksonville is in third place with a score of 568 (-8) with one round to play.

“We had too many big numbers today. Guys played 15-16 solid holes and then one hole ruined what otherwise would have been good rounds,” said coach Sean Covich. “We will found out what kind of competitiveness and pride our guys have tomorrow. We need to bounce back with a good round and end the fall season on a positive note.”

Renwick birdied four holes on the back nine and one on the front nine, but recorded a pair of bogeys and a triple bogey to finish the first round even par with a 72. He balanced a triple-bogey in the second round with a trio of birdies, again carding a 72 to finish even par.

Chris Williams and Max Sear recorded identical scores of 150 to finish the first two rounds six over par and in a tie for 50th place. Like Renwick, Williams posted balanced score, shooting 75-75=150 with a birdie in each round. Sear shot a 74 in the first round to finish two over, but struggled with six bogeys to two birdies in the second. He capped the day with a two-round score of 74-76=150.

Representing the Mountaineers for the first time in tournament play, Mason Short and Cole Hand sit 68th and 71st, respectively. Short registered a 78 in the first round, finishing with a birdie on his final hole, and shot another 78 on in the second round for a score of 78-78=156 (+12). Hand carded a 79 to finish seven over after 18 holes and shot an 80 in the second round to end the day 79-80=159 at 15 over.

WVU will tee off for the final round on at Quail Valley in tee times starting at 8 a.m. on Tuesday. Hand will tee off at 8 a.m. off of 10, followed by Short at 8:10 a.m., Williams at 8:20 a.m., Sear at 8:30 a.m. and Renwick at 8:40 a.m. The Mountaineers are paired with UConn and South Dakota State for the final round of play.
