DETROIT – Casey Baker of Novi joked that he just tries to play well so Greg Reynolds of Grand Blanc will be compelled to invite him back to the GAM Senior/Mid-Am Team Championship.

Expect him to get invited back next year.

Reynolds and Baker beat the field by three shots to win a third consecutive Senior/Mid-Am title, which was presented by Optishot at Detroit Golf Club Monday.

They teamed up for a four-ball score of 6-under 66 on the North Course in the morning, and shot even-par 68 on the South Course in the afternoon foursomes round for a 6-under 134 total.

Jim Lewis of Novi and Bryan Carpenter of Allen Park shot 67 in foursomes and 71 in four-ball for 137 and second place.

“We left a few shots out on the course in both rounds, but we played well,” Reynolds said. “This morning in the four-ball we each had four or five birdies, but on three holes both of us made birdies. In the rain in the afternoon, we could have been better but it wasn’t bad. I had a great partner.”

Baker said it was great to win for a third consecutive time, and that is was always fun to play with Reynolds. He said he got to know Reynolds several years ago in competition and knew he was a Flint Golf Club member. Baker’s father Basil grew up in Flint and had never played Flint Golf Club.

“So Greg made it possible for me to take my dad there,” he said. “That was great, and obviously my dad had talked about Greg because he is one of the best golfers ever from the Flint area. It’s great to get to compete with him.”

Baker is 37 and a vice-president at Carl’s Golfland, and Reynolds is 67 and a former U.S. Senior Amateur champion.  They trailed by a shot after morning play to Jerry Mamayek of Commerce Township and Leo Daigle of Wixom, who shot 65 and followed it up with a 73 in foursomes to tie for third at 138.

Also at 138 were Ken Hudson of Bloomfield Hills and Steve Jeske of Birmingham, who shot 67 in foursomes, and Steve Fedewa of Troy and Mike Fedewa of Canton, who shot 67 in four-ball play.

Four teams shot 139 including Randy Lewis of Alma and Jason May of Sterling Heights, Michael Anderson of Northville and Rick Herpich of Orchard Lake, Mike Raymond of Jackson and Brad Bastion of Shelby Township and Kevin Ennis of Plymouth and Scott Jaschuk of Milford.

A field of 86 golfers played in the event for two-golfer teams of a senior (age 55-plus) and a mid-amateur (age 25-plus).
