Rib Rack BBQ Sauce Review – Southern Bourbon

Rib Rack BBQ Sauce – Southern Bourbon
Grade: A
Teacher’s Comments: Rich and sweet

My love of BBQ is such that a couple of years ago, my family gave me a backyard smoker for Father’s Day.  It was a neat gift, and one that has paid off for them as much as for me. I spend the day smoking thirty pounds of pork butt, and they eat like Southern kings for a week.

Part of the fun for me has been experimenting with different rubs and sauces. A recent find was a bottle of Rib Rack Southern Bourbon BBQ sauce. Made by a Michigan-based company, Rib Rack boasts of “fresh, high quality garden ingredients.” Indeed, a look at the label turns up none of the suspicious-looking ingredients you might find on other, more mass market sauces. This features:  Water, Brown Sugar, Molasses, Tomato Paste, White Distilled Vinegar, Corn Starch, Bourbon, Salt, Natural Flavors, Spices, Dried Onion, Dried Garlic and Natural Worcestershire Flavor, ( Water, Organic Soybeans, Salt, Spices, Organic Alcohol, Onion Powder, Garlic Powder ).

No high fructose corn syrup. No things with names you can’t pronounce (except, perhaps, “Worcestershire.”)

Rib Rack’s Southern Bourbon BBQ sauce is rich, and somewhat sweet. I can’t really taste the bourbon, but that perhaps is embodied in the other flavors. Along with the richness and sweetness, it has a nice balance of tangy, salty and spicy flavors. The sauce is on the thicker side of sauces, which you might expect from the tomato paste base and the inclusion of corn starch.

Rib Rack is my sons’ current favorite.

Recommended.
