Tom Weiskopf, winner of the 1973 Open Championship and 16 PGA TOUR titles has died of pancreatic cancer.
I never met Mr. Weiskopf, nor even watched him play. I have, however, enjoyed playing several of his course designs. Indeed, Weiskopf designed what I think is the best public golf course in Michigan: Forest Dunes.
In all, Weiskopf worked on eighty some courses around the world. His “signature” was the drivable par four, which he is said to have brought back into style. The seventeenth at Forest Dunes is a stellar example of that kind of design.
Weiskopf most well-known course likely is TPC Scottsdale. In Michigan, he also designed Cedar River at Shanty Creek.
