Rogers City Country Club Golf Course Review
Roger City Country Club
Grade: B+
Teacher’s Comments: A very pleasant small-town course. A hidden gem.
I’m going to declare Rogers City Country Club a hidden gem.
The course is located well off the beaten track in Rogers City (population 2, 850) near the shores of Lake Huron, but if you’re in the area it definitely is worth a visit.
Rogers City CC is a parkland and meadows course with a fairly traditional nine located on the west side of “Golf Course Road” and a more modern feeling nine on the east side.
The traditional nine (and I suspect the original) is routed in a shape a bit like a hatchet, with the first hole running across the top of the blade, the next two down the outside of the handle, the fourth (a par three) across the bottom of the handle, the fifth runing back up the inside of the handle, and the remaining going back and forth inside the blade.
It’s an odd shaped piece of land, but the routing works.

Across the street, the back nine is a more open, and a bit more hilly. Whereas the front nine is classic parklands, the back nine has more of a meadows feel.
Both nines were quite enjoyable.
None of the individual holes are particularly inspiring, but taken as a whole, the course plays smoothly from the first tee to the final green. With wide fairways, and minimal water and bunkering, Rogers City CC is straightforward fun.

My favorite hole was the par four ninth. It’s a 333 yard dogleg left par four. A line of pine on the right threatens a tee shot that’s too far, while a stand of pine on the left will punish a shot that’s not far enough

The attraction, though, is the finish. The green is set to the right of a picaresque barn on a rise. A bunker on the left front threatens wayward shots. The green is open on the right; that’s where the safe shot is. Behind the green is a bit of a hill, framed by tall fescue and other wild grasses.
The barn makes it for me. I’ve can’t recall seeing another hole anywhere with that kind of charm.

From the tips, Rogers City CC comes in at just over 6,000 yards, which makes it very player friendly. The course has two par fives and four par threes. It finishes on a par 3, which is in my experience unusual.

Conditions on the day I played were good. Tee boxes, fairways and greens were all in good shape. The entire course was neat, and well-kept.
Rogers City CC also is a very pretty course. Tall fescue and wildflowers adorned the edges of many of the holes, offering contrasting textures and colors to the well-kept fairways.
Roger City CC is about an hour away from GolfBlogger’s Northern Michigan summer HQ, but I am absolutely planning on returning to this charming course.
