I am of the belief that the official rules of golf are unnecessarily complicated and remain an impediment to the wider adoption of the game.
That said, I know that most golfers actually want to play by the rules. I am often called upon by playing partners to explain a particular rule, or to tell them what to do with the ball in certain situations.
Years ago, I purchased a copy of the Illustrated Rules of golf, and found that it was a great way to jump start my understanding of the game. Good illustrations make a world of difference, especially when trying to grok things like the options you have when a ball lands in a hazard.
The 2016 edition is now available. If you don’t have it, and want to play by the rules, I recommend it.
