Schupan Recycling Returns As LPGA Volvik Championship Sustainability Partner

Schupan SustainAbility™, a division of Schupan Recycling, a national leader in the event sustainability industry headquartered in Michigan, and the LPGA Volvik Championship, will once again be sustainability partners for the third annual tournament to be played at Travis Pointe Country Club, May 21-27. The partnership is aimed at increasing waste diversion, integrating sustainable business practices and lessening the environmental impact of the tournament and highlights the growing importance of sustainability in sport.

“At the 2017 LPGA Volvik Championship, we achieved a 39 percent diversion rate up from the 28 percent diversion rate we had in the first year of the tournament,” said Jessica Loding, Director of Events & Strategic Partnerships for Schupan. “In total, 5,891 pounds of material was recycled rather than being sent to the landfill.

“Our partnership with the LPGA Volvik Championship proves you can be sustainable while putting on a world class event. We are excited to see the program develop in 2018 and continue to make positive environmental impacts within the Ann Arbor area.”

Over the two-year period, Schupan Recycling has collected:

• 2,242 lbs. of plastic
• 540 lbs. of aluminum cans
• 6,028 lbs. of cardboard
• 272 lbs. of scrap metal
• 1,270 lbs. of paper
• 2,134 lbs. of food waste
• 109 lbs. of plastic film
• 101 lbs. of tin
• 245 lbs. of glass

The LPGA Volvik Championship will run from May 21-27 with the four-day tournament played May 24-27 over Memorial Day weekend at Travis Pointe Country Club in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It will feature a full field of 144 players competing in a 72-hole showcase for a purse of $1.3 million. In addition to the estimated $20 million economic impact, the sustainability initiative will provide a platform to develop innovations and solutions that encourage a more circular economy through waste reduction, sustainable purchasing, educational awareness and evaluation of resource usage.
