MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Oct. 24 2016) – Max Sear shot four under in the second round to lead the West Virginia University golf team through the first two rounds of the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational in Vero Beach, Florida, on Monday. The tournament is hosted by McNeese State at the Quail Valley Golf and River Club.

The Mountaineers shot 291-292=583 to finish seven over par. They are tied for 12th place with 18 holes remaining. Michigan State is atop the team leaderboard at 15 under par (561), followed by Jacksonville in second at 14 under (562). Arkansas, who recently won the 2016 Mountaineer Intercollegiate, is thirteen under par (563) while North Florida is in fourth at 12 under (564).

“We played better than our score showed today,” said coach Sean Covich. “We just had too many big numbers on one or two holes. I expect a better result tomorrow from the guys.”

Sear posted three birdies to offset several bogies for three over par in the first round at 75. He rebounded to fire six birdies for four under par with a 68 in the second round, finishing tied for 17th at one under par with a score of 143.

Despite a bogey and a double bogey in the second, he recovered with a pair of birdies to finish one over par. He sits a stroke behind Sear and tied for 28th place with a 36-hole total of 71-73=144 for even par.

Tristan Nicholls is tied for 60th with a scorecard that shows 71-79=150 for six over par. Nicholls started off strong, carding four birdies to finish one under. However, he struggled in the second round with seven bogeys for seven over par.
