September 2 Is International Bacon Day
Celebrate accordingly.
I intend to make some stovetop popcorn using bacon grease instead of oil. It’s actually my favorite way to make popcorn. I use a Whirly Pop popcorn popper (Amazon link) and a couple of teaspoons of Bacon Up (Amazon link) It puts the microwave stuff to shame.
I also think I’m going to try making a Bacon Bourbon Maple Old Fashioned. The theory behind this is that you pour liquid bacon grease into a container of bourbon and let it sit until the fat solidifies. Once that happens, you strain out the solids. The flavor is supposed to remain.
The Bacon Bourbon Maple Old Fashioned is as follows:
2 oz Bacon Bourbon or Rye
1/2 oz Maple Syrup (use more or less depending on how sweet you like it)
Orange Bitters
Bacon for garnish
If you really want to go over the top, use smoked maple syrup (Amazon link)
I’m also contemplating some bacon wrapped barbeque shrimp.
All of this will be perfect for a long day of watching College Football.
