Sky Caddie SG 4

The SG4 is Sky Golf’s premier version of the Sky Caddie. With the largest display in the lineup , it can hold data on up to ten of the more than eleven thousand courses that Sky Golf has professionally mapped.

On the course, the SkyCaddie will give you accurate distance readings, including the full depth of the green from any angle. It also shows distances for targets and hazards.

If you—like me—play a variety of courses, this could be the thing to save your score. Nothing can kill a round faster than a severe miscalculation on the distance to the other side of a water hazard.

  1. I got an SG2 for Christmas, and I really like using it.  I am only playing the 36 holes at my club these days, but it is still very handy.

I am learning my true distances and finding out how much further an HX Hot goes with my swing than a Top Flite- and I am spending zero time looking for sprinkler heads (which these days usually have a few leaves on top of them).  My club has those great little pyramids at the 100, 150, 200, 250 marks, but is a little stingy at times with distances on sprinklers—if I am within a few yards one way or the other of a pyramid, then I don’t bother with the SkyCaddie, but otherwise I keep it on the bag as I walk and usually take a peek before taking a club.

  2. I have a SG2 and loved using it.  Shortly after I bought it, I lost two of the three screws that hold the back cover on.  I could not find any hardware store, electronics store or jeweler that had the same screw.  I tried contacting sky caddie to order replacements.  No one bothered to return my email or phone calls.  After about a year of use, the yardage was off by as much as 8 yards at 150 out.  Again I attempted to call and I wrote email,  I never received a single response.  This last weekend, I connected it t to my computer to load a new course. Their software indicated my SK2 needed an update.  I answered yes for the update.  Now my SK2 won’t even turn on.  I called the company, received a voice machine and left a message.  I emailed them again.  It’s been two days, plenty of time to respond and not one single reply.  I like the system, but am fed up with the lack of customer service.  I bought a range finder today.  Some companies have poor customers service.  Sky Caddie has NONE.  If you buy their product, just pray you don’t have any trouble with it.

  4. Don’t buy SkyCaddie or other SkyGolf Product!

I am on a quest to warn people about SkyGolf / SkyCaddie.  I bought an SG4 mainly because of the SD RAM expansion slot which I have several adds saved where it is promised that this slot allows you to save more courses; LIE, the slot does nothing, never did.I have called SkyCaddie about this many times and have been promised a solution over and over.  At this point it is too late, there are way too many better technologies on the market.  On top of it all I had a terrible time finding and maintaining satellite connections.

uPro is the unit I like best and, after I purchased it, I sent them an e-mail support question and they got back with me within 24 hours – ON A SUNDAY!  I waited for weeks and never received promised call-backs from SkyGolf.  Their customer support is a joke; I suspect that their business model will not be obsolete since they will soon not be able to charge people $50.00 a year.  I believe that this puts SkyGolf at risk of going out of business as their business model requires that people continue to be willing to pay this outrageous fee.

I have never used the GolfBuddy, but plan to buy one soon for traveling as it has 20,000 courses pre-loaed.  There are others, such as iGolf, which are far less expensive than the SkyCaddie.

I think that SkyGolf thought that their IntelliGreen patents would give them a sustainable advantage; fortunately uPro has blown that technology out of the water. In short, SkyGolf was early, but is not the technology leader , pricing leader or customer service leader (in fact I have rarely, if ever, dealt with a company with worse customer service).

BTW, if anyone wants a used SG4 for Cheap, I got one that will be selling used

  5. I agree I have had nothing but problems with my skycaddie sg4 will not connect to the computer, loses courses, quarter of the time it was not able to find the correct yardage or any yardage & who in this world attaches the cable like skycaddie sg4 did? WHAT A ROYALL PAIN. Should be like the sg3 or sg5
I can see why they brought out sg5 as fast as they did.

  6. It would be hard to imagine a worse piece of design and support than this product. The eccentric connector has to be experienced to be believed. There is no clock. There is no reset button – SG4 freezes between 1 and 5 times per round of golf. There is no proper customer support. They have the nerve to charge you yearly for using your own property. DO NOT TOUCH THIS WORTHLESS PIECE OF **** UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!

  8. Thanks to everyone who took the time to write opinions on the Sky Caddie. I was prepared to buy one off of the net until I began reading the negative reviews. To many bad experience’s with this product, so I’ll look at other ideas for yardage. To bad, as I was looking forward to having one. One of the great things going for us as consumers is having our peers who have spent the money on products being willing to share the experience.

  9. Don’t buy any SkyCaddie product.  They recently changed their website and software, and my “top of the line” SG5 ($400 plus $40/year fee) won’t download courses.  Customer service has fiddled and fooled around for over a month and a half, when you have the patience to wait an hour to get through to them, and still nothing.  They finally just started ignoring me and my E-mails, and I haven’t heard from them in weeks.

Don’t get stuck with an inoperable, expensive toy.

  10. I bought a Sky Caddie SG4 with SG5 software on E-bay. I had the pleasure of borrowing an SG5 before I bought the SG4. Both products performed flawlessly. My SG4 acted like an SG5 meaning that I did not have to do much more than turn it on, let it find the satellites, and then play golf. When I hit a ball across fairways, it asked me which hole I was playing and then gave me distance to my current hole. It tells me the carry over hazards and the distances to the layup and aiming points. I do not know about the expansion slot and have no use for it because I have 9 courses saved. I have no problem trading out courses. It was tricky to get it hooked up at first but you have to follow the instructions by installing the CD first, going to the website, and then connecting the Sky Caddie (but pause long enough to install the drivers before continuing to purchase your plan). Yes I have WinXP not Vista. You will really enjoy it. P.S. some of the other products (like the Callaway with fly over technology) will keep you standing in the fairway too long and may earn you hard stares from your 4-some and the group behind you. All I needed was a quick glance, hit, and go with my SG4 ($160-$180 on Ebay) with SG5 software.

  11. Great product. Terrible customer service and manufacturing design/quality. I recently had a power connector problem. On the SG4 unit it has a screw-in connector on the USB power cable. It ends up getting stripped out on the inserted nut on the unit due to the lack of threads on the cable side. So, I send an email to Skycaddie, 2 days later, the reply tells me to call Cust. Serv/ Tech Support for an RMA number and to see if there is an other technical issues. My first call was 15 mins, I hung up, had to do something. My second call, I stay on the phone waiting another 28 mins, while chatting with a Cust. Support person. They told me to continue to hold for the next rep. I told him to just pickup the phone and call me, he couldn’t that is a different department. Man, talk about fustration. As a Mech. Engr. I end up pulling the nut out of the back of the unit and flipping up side down, using the other end and re-inserting/pressing back into the unit. It will work until it strips out this end. Anyway, don’t buy a Skycaddie unit unless you are prepared to treat it as a disposible electronic device. hehe Aloha, Mark

  13. Here is an update on my SG4 with SG5 software that I bought off of E-Bay. It is still working flawlessly. I have learned to turn it on when I get to the parking lot of the golf course because it can take between 7 and 10 minutes to find the satellites. By the time I get my clubs together, put on my shoes, and pay my green fee, it is ready to play golf. Next I make sure that I line up the screw (yes it is an odd connection) and tighten it only enough for the screw to be secure. In other words I don’t keep turning it until it won’t turn anymore, it only needs to be hand tightened, not torqued down. This will avoid stripping the tap side of the connection. I only charge it for about an hour or two which gives me long battery life. My iron play has improved exponentially. I am beginning to use the “mark” feature so that I can improve my fairway wood play because I don’t really know those distances yet. It is a great tool but you must take care of it to avoid having to call customer support. Don’t let it bake in the car. Don’t overcharge it. Give it the same care as your cell phone and you will enjoy it for a very long time.

  14. I wonder if I could find enough folks to file a class action suit against Sky Caddie.  The SG4 is junk for sure.

  15. The SkyCaddie SG4 has a lot of problems. Mine had cord connection problems, which they replaced. But, the real problem is the GPS satellite hook-up, which is a common problem that SkyGolf will not admit to. It continually drops the conection & will not give you the yardage. There is an obvious design error that they (and the consumer) are stuck with. When you call in, the tech support people are usually very nice (once you get thru), but they won’t admit to the problem & will do nothing to help you.
I would have my doubts on anything SkyGolf makes as a result of this. There are too many other brands out there now. Check carefully before you buy.

  16. After three years as a loyal SkyCaddie customer, I have had it with these people. Ordered a new belt clip (the old one self-destructed) for $14.95. Got charged $19.95 for shipping and handling (UPS). Have spent a pile of dough on annual subscriptions over the past three years, plus additional car chargers, Y-cords, etc. The web site is awful, the SkyCaddie has weird days of being embarrassingly inaccurate, there are all sorts of GPS-powered rangefinders available for my iPhone, and I think Bushnell laser rangefinderts work better.
So adios SkyCaddie. PS. Learn to spell the word, “Caddy.”

  17. I have an earlier email on this page.  I bought a laser device and love it, after having so many poor customer service expieriences.  I have friends who still have a sky caddy and when theirs work, my distance is better than theirs.  Some people love the sky caddie, most don’t.  Buy a range finder, same price and no yearly fees, I love mine from Bushnell.

  18. I had my skycaddie SG5 stolen along with car charger after reporting it stolen to skygolf I called them to see if they were going to shut it off and render it usless to anyone who may purchace afore mentioned “stolen merchandice”and was told that it was useless to anybody who wanted to get online and “manage the skycaddie.but that they could golf with the ten or so courses I had already down loaded onto it.I said can’t you cancel my subscription to it and shut it off and was told that if they did that it would unflag it as stolen then whoever had it could get online and use it as if they had purchased it leagally.then I got to thinking if my subscription ran out tommorow and they cancelled my subscription the same thing could happen.surely the tech people there could turn it off and still have the serial number flagged as stolen.the tech people at skycaddie are not the smartest group of people i’ve run into

My mood about my SkyCaddie has soured due to horrible tech support. I now use my smartphone. As to your situation, I think that SkyCaddie will do anything to get money. By canceling your account and freeing it up for someone else, they just got 2 “subscriptions” for the price of one.

  20. I purchased an SG4 and when it arrived, I found that it had a dead battery and there was no charger included. In order to charge it, one has to buy an accessory charger (plus shipping) at not an insubstantial price. I think it is rather crummy to not include a charger and to not inform the buyer of that when purchased. I’m sorry I did not better check out the SkyCaddie vis-a-vis the competition before I bought.

  21. Dismal product and awful customer svc. Trouble from the very beginning. Would not sync with the software. Company sent a refurbed unit that worked ok for 90 days and then same issue.

Still had a month left on my membership but Skygolf would not transfer the membership back to an old SG2 that I have that works well.

Screwed by a company that is probably not gonna be around much longer. Better products are available that don’t require subscription renewal every year.
Smartphone APS will be the death of these guys and their crappy products that they don’t stand behind.

Doing the right thing is what keeps customers.

    Skygolf hasn’t got a clue.
