Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll, Michigan State’s head women’s golf coach won her eighth GAM Women’s Mid Amateur Title Monday at West Shore Golf & Country Club.
Slobodnik-Stoll won the title on the first sudden-death playoff hole to overcome Ashley Crain of Bloomfield Hills. Slobodnik-Stoll and Crane each shot 4-over-par 75 in the eighteen holes of regulation play for the rain-shortened event.
The 2015 Mid-Amateur was Slobodnik-Stoll’s first win in the Mid_Amateur since 2012. It is her fifteenth GAM Title.
“It’s always fun to win, and I’m always trying to keep up with my (MSU) players, or at least stay in their same league,” Slobodnik-Stoll said after accepting the Jeanne L. Myers Trophy. “I have not been a good player for a couple of years now, and I have been working with Jason Guss and have changed my game a little bit.”
The coach said she had neglected her own game some in recent years and knew her swing was in a bad spot.
“I put the time in as well this year, and I feel more comfortable hitting the golf ball and doing what I want with the ball,” she said.
Defending champion Enid Gage of Wyoming and Sarah Olsen, a former Spartan player for Slobodnik-Stoll now living in Brownstown, tied for third with rounds of 76, one stroke out of the playoff.
In the senior division for players over age 55 Mary Petrovich of West Bloomfield shot a 79 to win by one shot over Julie Gloor of Grosse Ile. Donna Benford of Linden (81) and Lori Pospiech of Grand Rapids (82) rounded out the top four.
Net and flight winners also received trophies from the GAM in the tournament that kicked the women’s season into action. West Shore, a 108-year-old club, hosted the event for the first time.
