Spieth’s Caddie Is A Former Math Teacher

I was intrigued to learn that Jordan Spieth’s caddie, Michael Greller, is a former teacher. Greller began caddying as a way to supplement his teaching income (as pretty much every teacher has to do these days), caddied for Justin Thomas at the 2010 US Amateur, for Spieth at the US Junior Amateur in 2011, and then again for Spieth at the 2012 US Open. Spieth finished as low amateur and Greller earned a full time gig. He has been on Spieth’s bag since 2012.

It’s been pretty lucrative. Caddies typically get 10% of a player’s prize money (and perhaps more if they win). Here are Spieth’s earnings over the last couple of years:

2015 (PGA Tour): $4,958,196
2014 (PGA Tour): $4,342,748
2013 (PGA Tour): $3,879,820
2013 (Web.com Tour): $50,150

Based on this, Greller has probably picked up at least a million dollars over the last four years. That’s nearly as much as a school teacher earns in a thirty year career. He made a good career move there.

Interestingly—and good news for Spieth—is that Grellar’s home course when he was moonlighting was Chambers Bay. That’s the site of this year’s US Open. Thus, Grellar probably has a wealth of knowledge that other caddies just won’t be able to match. Given Spieth’s precision game, that should help him a lot.
