Sudden Coffee Review

Sudden Coffee Instant Coffee
Grade: B (it’s an “A” if the discussion is just about instant coffee).
Teacher’s Comments: Probably as good as instant coffee can get. But it’s still instant coffee

For most of my life, I was not a coffee drinker. I have frankly never liked hot drinks and having heard people complain about “cold coffee,” the idea of trying it otherwise seemed a non-starter.

In recent years, however, I have discovered the joys of iced coffee. It started with a sip of an iced frappe Mrs. GolfBlogger got at McDonald’s. I liked it and soon found that regular coffee over ice also is tasty. Chilled coffee now has largely replaced soft drinks as my go-to beverage. There are surely some health benefits in that.

Given the ubiquity of coffee houses, home and office brewers and K-Cup machines, it is unlikely that anyone in America is far from a cuppa joe. If you are, however, Sudden Coffee has the solution: premium coffee house grade coffee in an instant mix.

Sudden Coffee’s instant mix is called “Fore!,” reflecting the fruity and bright flavor, which the company’s founders think suggests the classic Arnold Palmer lemonade-and-iced tea beverage. I personally don’t taste an Arnold Palmer in the coffee but I agree that it is clean and light. It is as good as instant coffee can get.

The Sudden Coffee mix is delivered in plastic test tubes in a rough cloth bag. It mixes quickly and completely in a mug of cold water.

Sudden Coffee is a lot more expensive than Folgers, but the company says the difference is in those beans and process. Other instant coffee products, they say, use leftover beans and over brew to cut costs. Sudden Coffee says that its beans and brewing are the same you will find in a premium coffee shop.

Sudden Coffee’s beans are a blend of two single-origin coffees that are roasted by 49th Parallel Coffee Roasters. For the cognoscenti, here are the specifications:

Colombia Samaniego

Producer: Three Smallholders
Country: Colombia
Region: Samaniego, Nariño
Elevation: 1950-2000 m.a.s.l.
Variety: Caturra, Colombia
Roasted By: 49th Parallel
Guatemala Poaquil

Producer: Smallholders
Country: Guatemala
Region: San Jose Poaquil, Chimaltenango
Elevation: 1500-2000 m.a.s.l.
Variety: Bourbon, Typica
Roasted By: 49th Parallel

After brewing under the supervision of baristas, the coffee is dehydrated at sub-zero temperatures to lock in flavors.

I keep drink mixes in my bag to add to add to water when I’m on the course. Having a couple Sudden Coffee on hand just might be the thing at the turn when I need a pick-me-up to help my flagging focus.
