Sugar Springs Golf Club Hosting 20th Michigan Women’s Senior Amateur

GLADWIN – For the third consecutive year Sugar Springs Golf Club is hosting the Michigan Women’s Senior Amateur Championship.

Many of the top senior women golfers in the state will play in the 20th edition of the championship presented by Stifel Investment Services on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 16-17.

Sugar Springs Golf Club is part of a residential community located between Gladwin and West Branch. The club’s course was designed by Michigan Golf Hall of Fame designer Jerry Matthews and features 18 holes that can be played to a maximum of 6,737 yards. It has been rated three stars by Golf Digest and previously made The Michigan Golfer list of the top 25 public courses in Michigan.

Dan McGinnis is in his second year as the head golf professional and Dwight McCann is the superintendent. Learn more about Sugar Springs at sugarsprings.net

The Michigan Women’s Senior Amateur provides the senior players with the opportunity to work their way through flighted match play brackets, as well as consolation matches so all participants are guaranteed to play on both days.

The first day stroke play round is only required for players that seek to qualify for the Championship Bracket. An additional gross scoring bracket of eight will be made consisting of players that do not make the top eight in stroke play, plus those that would rather play gross matches but do not want to participate in stroke-play qualifying. All other brackets will consist of net matches with players seeded by index.

Last year, Lori Schlicher of Lewiston rallied from a 2-down deficit and beat defending champion and three-time winner Julie Massa of Pentwater 1-up in the championship match to take home the Jean Murray Trophy. It was Schlicher’s first Golf Association of Michigan state title.

Schlicher is returning to defend her title against a field that will include past champions Cathy Netter of Monroe, Donna Benford of Linden, Sue Campbell of Kalamazoo, Barb Schmid of Grand Rapids, and Cindy Obermeyer of Birmingham.
