TaylorMade’s M3 Driver has been met with a degree of skepticism for its twist-face design. Woods traditionally had a curving face to encourage what is called a gear effect, encouraging off-center hits to spin back to the center of the fairway. The TaylorMade M3’s face twists from heel to toe, with the same intent: to correct off-center hits and produce straighter shots. Twist Face provides more loft in the high-toe and less loft in the low-heel to produce more consistent spin where golfers commonly mis-hit.

It will be interesting to see if this is a gimmick, or if it catches on among the larger golfing public.

The TaylorMade M3 Driver features

• A new face curvature w/corrective face angle on off-center hits, to reduce side spin & deliver straighter shots. Provides more loft in high-toe & less loft in low-heel for more consistent spin
• A new sole slot with reinforced outer portions of the slot allow for a lighter, more flexible face
• The center portion of the slot increases ball speed low on the face & drops unwanted spin for more distance
• The back y-portion provides forgiving draw and fade options. Splitting the weights provides the ultimate in forgiveness
