TecTecTec Laser Rangefinder VPRO 500s
Grade: B
Teacher’s Comments: Does the job; some trouble locking in on the flag.

The TecTecTec Laser Rangefinder VPRO 500S is a competent laser rangefinder with a lot of nice features for a very attractive price. As of this writing, the TecTecTec VPRO500S on Amazon is about half the price of a Bushnell with slope features. It also is less expensive than the GolfBuddy Laser Rangefinder with Slope.

Features on the TecTecTec Laser Rangefinder VPRO 500 S include:

  • 6x magnification
  • Pinseeker mode to measure overlapping targets.
  • First Target Priority mode displays the distance of the closest target.
  • Scan Mode to check distance to hazard
  • Pinslope Technology to compensate for elevation
  • +/- 1 yard accuracy
  • 540 yard range
  • Lightweight: 0.41 pounds
  • Rainproof
  • multilayer coating

In the field, I compared the TecTecTec Laser Rangefinder VPRO 500S to my GolfBuddy found that the two gave nearly identical readings. In that sense, it is quite accurate.

On the other hand, I thought the TecTecTec Laser Rangefinder VPRO 500S seemed to have a little more trouble locking in on the flagstick, especially when there were trees in the background. I first noticed it when I got a reading of 220 to the hole when I knew that it could not be more than 150. I re-aligned the targeting reticle a bit, and got a better result. After some experimentation, I found that I got my best results when aiming the center of the reticle at the middle of the flagstick.  It is a minor annoyance, rendered moot in practice. If you get a result that seems unlikely based on your position, zap it again.

Finding the range to other objects, such as trees and bunker facings was much easier.

One of the nicest parts about the TecTecTec Laser Rangefinder VPRO 500S is that it is very compact. It takes up very little space in the bag, and at six and a half ounces, is practically unnoticeable even when carrying the bag. It is much smaller than my older Bushnell and comparable in size to the very compact GolfBuddy.

The TecTecTec Laser Rangefinder VPRO 500S comes with a nice case that hangs comfortably from a clip on the outside of my bag. The elastic band makes it easy to keep it secure while walking, while offering easier entry. Zipping and unzipping the case would really slow things up (and probably quickly result in a broken zipper).

Overall, I think that the TecTecTec Laser Rangefinder VPRO 500S is a good buy, especially for the recreational golfer. It is inexpensive enough — and yet good enough — that a weekender can justify the expense.
