Testing Golf Gear: The Breakthrough Golf Technology Putter Shaft, TecTecTec Ult-X Laser Rangefinder and the Srixon Z-Star Golf Balls.

It’s been a bit difficult this month. We’ve had two snowstorms in April here in Michigan, and the other days have seen more rain than not. I don’t like to do product reviews until I’ve had a dozen or more trials, so I’m holding off until better weather comes — hopefully this next week. Still, I braved cold weather to try the following:

Breakthrough Golf Technology Putter Shaft

This putter shaft, developed by the legendary Barney Adams, is the offspring of a steel shaft and a graphite one.

It’s been a winner for me this far, and has breathed new life into my vintage Scotty Cameron Newport putter. Still, it is hard to tell because I am still putting on winter greens.

Even in the colder weather, I’ve been pleased with the performance of the Srixon Z-Star golf ball. It’s got plenty of distance and a nice, penetrating ball flight. In the early going here in Michigan, I’ve got several things working against me: 1) general rust from a long layoff 2) cold air 3) wind and 4) damp ground. Nonetheless, there is enough in these balls to make me want to keep playing them.

It’s a lot easier to test laser rangefinders in the cold than it is balls and clubs. I’m going to give the TecTecTec a few more rounds, but I can safely say at this point that the Ult-X Rangefinder is a winner. It very quickly locks onto the flagstick — even from hundreds of yards out — and gives an accurate reading.

A really cool feature of the rangefinder is that you can pull the front of the rangefinder and it will give you the distance based on triangulation with the elevation. The yellow band means that you can use the device in tournaments as long as you don’t pull it out.

I’ll have full reviews of these shortly and I’ll be testing golf gear as the season progresses.
