The Hottest Golf Apparel Brand In Your State

What is the hottest golf apparel brand in your state?

Nike? TaylorMade? Under Armour? Or a less prominent brand such as Peter Millar or Cutter and Buck?

To answer this question, I dove into Google search data tools to find the “trending” golf apparel brand in each state in 2016. “Trending” indicates that the brand had the biggest increase in search frequency over the previous year. That is not the “most searched,” but it suffices for a measure of “hotness.”

Nike led the listings as the hottest golf apparel brand in nineteen states. Under Armor was the hottest golf apparel brand in nine states. Oakley led in six. Fila/Titleist, and Puma were the hottest brands in two states each. Peter Millar, Ralph Lauren and Ping took top honors in two states each. Cutter and Buck took the Michigan market. TaylorMade/Adidas was the hottest brand in just one state: California. Maine was the only state that Callaway scored in as the hot apparel brand.

There did seem to be a couple of regional trends. Under Armour cut a swath from its home state of Maryland to Illinois. Neighbors Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma all were Puma states. Nike dominated the west.

Looking back on the data over the last five years, Nike was the most searched golf apparel brand in Every. Single. State. Not much of a story there. However, as much as Nike dominates golfer’s attentions in terms of apparel, it was a near afterthought in clubs. That probably goes a long way toward explaining why Nike exited the equipment business.

I was surprised that two of my favorite brands — FootJoy and Greg Norman — did not show up in the listings in at least one state. I favor both of those brands because of the cut of their shirts.
