The Open Championship Preview & Pick

One of the most prestigious golf majors of the season gets underway on July 15th at Royal St. George’s Golf Course. It will be a welcome sight to see play underway at the major, as it wasn’t played last year due to COVID-19.

However, which players should gamblers look to make a bet on after taking advantage of one of the many welcome offers for gambling sites?

 Event Information & Records

The Open is now the fourth major of the season. This has been the case since the PGA Championship was moved to May. The last Open took place at Portrush in Northern Ireland. It was the first time since 1951 that the event had taken place outside of England or Scotland. It was a memorable event for Shane Lowry, who claimed his first major success, scoring 269. The record score in The Open was set in 2016, as Henrik Stenson scored 264 to finish -20 under par.

Young Tom Morris remains the record holder for most wins in this major, as he recorded six victories between 1896 and 1914. He also won four straight championships during that run between 1868 and 1972. The only multiple champions of The Open since 2000 are Tiger Woods, Padraig Harrington, and Ernie Els. European players have won the last two championships, with Francesco Molinari winning the major in 2018.

Players In Contention

A number of previous winners of The Open will be prominent in the betting for the fourth major of the season. Rory McIlroy is the shortest price ex-winner of The Open, as he looked to put a difficult season behind him with a win in his home major. McIlroy last won The Open in 2014, as he won by two strokes from Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia. However, his form in the majors this season has ultimately been disappointing.

He finished in a tie for seventh in the US Open, which meant that he had finished in the top ten in the last three renewals. However, he missed the cut in the Masters and was back in 49th in the PGA Championship. He hasn’t finished in the top ten at The Open since winning the championship seven years ago.

However, the player at the top of the betting will be Jon Rahm. The Spanish star won his first major in the US Open on his last start. However, he hasn’t finished in the top ten at The Open on four previous attempts. Regardless, he comes into this event in excellent major form, as he also finished in ties for eight and fifth in the PGA Championship and Masters, respectively, this season.

The Open Championship Pick

One of the main factors to take into consideration before placing a bet is the trend that only one winner since 2007 has been the favourite or second-favourite in the betting. The average odds of the winner of The Open have been nearer to 62/1. Therefore, it could be worth siding with a player at higher odds, and having an each-way bet.

Our preference would be for Matthew Fitzpatrick, who has been in decent form in the majors this season. He has completed the courses at the Masters, PGA Championship, and US Open already this season. His putting could be one of his biggest strengths at Royal St George, and he could be set for a strong challenge after finishing in a tie for 20th back in 2019.
