The Rock Hits A 490 Yard Drive

Dwayne Johnson, aka “The Rock” recently posted on Instagram that he hit a 490 yard drive.

That’s a long way for The Rock to hit the rock.

Granted, it likely was a one-time sort of thing, like the time I uncorked a 300+ yarder at Arcadia Bluffs. I had the wind, the ground was hard, etc.

To put it in perspective, the longest recorded drive in a professional event was 515 yards, recorded by Mike Austin in 1974. He had a persimmon driver. And a balata ball. Think about that. He likely was aided by the desert air in Las Vegas, the 2,000 feet-above-sea-level altitude and the 35 mph tailwind. Tiger Woods uncorked a 498 yarder at Kapalua in 2002. Davis Love III hit a 476 yarder at the Mercedes Championship in 2004.

In 2017, Dustin Johnson is averaging 316 yards off the tee. Luke List is averaging 313. In all, 34 players average 300 or more yards.

Can The Rock repeat his blast on a regular basis? I doubt it. But it is something to brag about.
