The Streak At 60 – A February Round In Michigan

This past weekend I got out for an early February round at Washtenaw Golf Club. That extends my streak of months with at least one round played in Michigan to 60.

February always is the most dicey month for golf in Michigan. I am nearly always certain to get in rounds in November and December. We seem to generally have a thaw sometime in January. By March, golf is a certainty (if occasionally a pretty cold one)

That leaves February. Last year, we were in a deep, deep freeze for much of the month. I managed to squeeze in a round with just a couple of days to go — and about six holes in was regretting my decision. It was positively frigid.

This past weekend, on the other hand, temperatures soared into the mid 40s. After a few holes, I was down to shirt sleeves. The sun was out for much of the day. It was glorious.

I wasn’t the only insane person out for a February round. In fact, Washtenaw Golf Club was fairly busy.

The tenth green at Washtenaw. Shaded by trees, the snow still lingered.

Large patches of snow still lingered on fairways and greens. Several of the greens were in fact unplayable. It did not matter. Under Extreme Winter Rules ™ we just played to the green, gave ourselves two putts, picked up the ball and moved on.

I did not play very well. Having not played regularly in more than a month — and having shirked my New Year’s resolution to get in 100 swings a day — I never found my rhythm. I drove the ball well, but my iron and hybrid play was awful.

But again: It did not matter. It was February. It was sunny. And I was outside enjoying the fresh air on a beautiful golf course.

Thanks to the staff at Washtenaw Golf Club for being open.
